Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): A Practical Strategy for Indian Businesses in 2026
I keep meeting founders who've never heard the term GEO but are already living its consequences. A client asked ChatGPT about vendors in her category, and a competitor kept coming up. That's GEO in one sentence: making sure AI models choose you, not the guy next door.
What GEO actually means
GEO is the practice of getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. It's a cousin of SEO (see our AEO vs SEO guide), but the mechanics differ. SEO optimizes for an algorithm returning a list. GEO optimizes for a model that reads many sources and decides, in its own words, who gets mentioned.
India is still early here. OptimizeGEO's Kirthiga Reddy calls it "the first innings of AI search," meaning most Indian brands haven't started, and the ones who do this well now get a head start that's hard to close later.
How models pick who to cite
A model leans on the same signals a skeptical researcher would:
• Is this source mentioned consistently across the web, not just on its own site?
• Does the content answer the question directly, in the language it was asked?
• Is there a real person or organization behind it, with credible experience?
• Is the information current, without vague hedging?
The GEO build, step by step
1. Entity clarity first – consistent name, description, and category across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and directories.
2. Write for extraction – every important claim should survive being pulled out of context and still make sense.
3. Earn third-party mentions – genuine coverage, guest contributions , credible directory listings.
4. Publish original data or a clear point of view – a specific finding beats a generic listicle.
5. Structure for parsing – question-style headings, direct first-sentence answers, FAQ blocks.
6. Track citations, not just rankings – manually query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini on real customer questions.
For a typical Indian SME
Consistent entity info across five or six key places, one or two genuinely original data points published this quarter, a few actively pursued third-party mentions, and content answering real customer questions in plain language. It compounds, each piece makes the next citation more likely.
