Ranking #1 on Google used to be the finish line. Now there's a new one: being the source an AI names when someone asks a question in your category.
The good news is that getting cited isn't random. AI engines follow patterns, and you can work with them. Here are nine steps Indian brands can apply starting this week. (New to the concept? Read our complete guide to Generative Engine Optimization first.)
Step 1: Find the prompts your buyers actually ask
List 20–50 questions your customers type into AI tools. Think conversationally: "Which is the best accounting software for a CA firm in India?" rather than "accounting software India". Good sources include sales call notes, Google's People Also Ask, Reddit and Quora threads, and support tickets.
Step 2: Check who's being cited today
Run each prompt in ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Record which brands are mentioned and which URLs are cited. This baseline shows exactly which pages you need to beat. Tools in our GEO tools guide can automate this.
Step 3: Make sure AI crawlers can reach you
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and confirm you aren't blocking OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User or PerplexityBot.
- Register with Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap, since ChatGPT's search relies partly on Bing.
- Enable IndexNow so new and updated pages are picked up quickly.
- Avoid putting key content behind JavaScript that crawlers may not render.
Step 4: Lead every section with the answer
AI models extract clean, self-contained statements. Write the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then add detail.
- Weak: "When it comes to choosing payroll software, there are many factors that businesses need to think about..."
- Strong: "For Indian startups under 50 employees, payroll software should handle PF, ESI, TDS and professional tax automatically. Here's how to compare options."
Step 5: Add facts AI can quote
The Princeton-led GEO research found that adding statistics, credible quotations and source citations improved visibility in generative answers. In practice:
- Include specific numbers (prices in ₹, timelines, percentages)
- Quote named experts from your team with their credentials
- Cite government sources (RBI, MCA, GST portal) where relevant
- Publish original data, like a small customer survey; it is one of the strongest citation magnets
Step 6: Use structure AI can parse
Question-style H2s, comparison tables, numbered steps, short paragraphs and a FAQ section all help. Add Organization, Article and FAQPage schema so machines understand the page. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of sites, but the structured data still clarifies your content.
Step 7: Build your brand as a clear entity
Keep your brand name, one-line description, founders and location identical across your website, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Google Business Profile and industry directories. A detailed About page with verifiable facts goes a long way.
Step 8: Earn mentions where AI looks for consensus
This is often the biggest lever. AI answers tend to reflect what multiple independent sources agree on.
- Digital PR: Pitch data-led stories to Indian business media such as YourStory, Inc42, Economic Times or Business Standard.
- Listicles and roundups: Get included in "best X in India" articles, which AI engines frequently cite.
- Reviews: Encourage reviews on G2, Capterra, Google or industry-specific platforms.
- Communities: Answer questions genuinely on Reddit (r/indianstartups, r/IndiaInvestments) and Quora. Don't spam.
- Podcasts and webinars: Transcripts become indexable, quotable content.
Step 9: Monitor, update, repeat
Re-run your prompt list monthly. When a competitor overtakes you, study the cited page: is it fresher, more specific, better structured? Update your content with a visible "Last updated" date. Track AI referrals in GA4 by filtering sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
Quick Example: A Bengaluru SaaS Brand
Imagine a Bengaluru-based HR software startup missing from answers to "best HRMS for Indian startups". A realistic 90-day plan: fix robots.txt and submit to Bing (week 1), rewrite its comparison page with a ₹ pricing table and compliance features (weeks 2–3), publish a survey of 200 HR managers (weeks 4–6), pitch the findings to startup media (weeks 6–8), and collect G2 reviews (ongoing). Each step feeds a different citation signal.
Key Takeaways
Getting cited by AI comes down to three things: be findable (technical access), be quotable (structured, factual content), and be corroborated (mentions across trusted sources). For the full strategic picture, revisit our GEO strategy guide for Indian businesses.
