Marketplace search rewards a different thing from web search. Google ranks pages it judges most relevant and authoritative; Amazon ranks products it expects to sell. Conversion rate, sales velocity and customer satisfaction drive placement, which means marketplace optimisation is as much a commercial exercise as a content one.
Relevance gets you considered, performance ranks you
A listing must first match the query — through title, backend keywords and attributes — to be eligible at all. Among eligible listings, position is largely determined by expected revenue: how often shoppers who see it buy it, how fast it sells, and whether buyers keep it.
This creates a compounding effect in both directions. A listing that converts gets more visibility, which produces more sales, which reinforces the ranking. A listing that converts poorly is progressively buried. Breaking out of the second cycle usually requires fixing conversion first, since more traffic to a poorly converting listing accelerates the decline.
Where listings actually lose sales
- Images — the primary image drives the click, and secondary images answer objections; this is usually the highest-leverage fix
- Titles — must carry searchable attributes without becoming unreadable keyword strings
- Bullets — most shoppers read these instead of the description, so this is where objections get handled
- Backend keywords — invisible to shoppers, indexed for search, and routinely left empty or duplicated
- Reviews and questions — the strongest conversion influence and largely earned through product and service quality
Pricing is a ranking input
Because marketplaces optimise for expected revenue, price affects placement through its effect on conversion. A listing can be perfectly optimised and still lose to a competitor priced meaningfully lower with comparable reviews.
