Backlinks Are Losing Power in AI Search — Here's What We're Using Instead

If you've worked in SEO for a while, you've probably heard the same advice again and again: build more backlinks if you want better rankings.

And honestly, backlinks still matter.

But while working on content for different websites, we started noticing something interesting. Some pages with a lot of backlinks were not getting the kind of visibility we expected in AI-generated answers. At the same time, a few pages with far fewer backlinks were being picked up because their content was much clearer and easier to understand.

That made us ask a simple question:

Are backlinks still enough to make content visible in AI search?

The short answer is no.

What We Noticed While Working on Content

We compared different pages where the backlink strength was very different. Some had 50+ referring links, while others had fewer than 10.

At first, we expected the pages with more backlinks to have a clear advantage.

But when we looked at how these pages appeared in AI-generated answers, the difference wasn't as obvious as we expected.

The pages that stood out had something else going for them.

Their answers were easy to find and easy to understand.

Their headings clearly matched the questions people were asking. Important information was written directly instead of being hidden inside long paragraphs. Brand names, product names, facts, and statistics were clearly mentioned.

As a content writer, this was probably the biggest lesson for me.

Clear Writing Is Becoming More Important

Think about how you would answer a question if someone asked you directly.

If someone asks, “What is technical SEO?”, you wouldn't spend five minutes talking around the subject.

You'd probably say:

“Technical SEO is the process of improving a website's technical setup so search engines can crawl, understand, and index its pages more effectively.”

Then you'd explain the details.

We're applying the same thinking to website content.

Instead of making readers search through a 2,000-word article for the answer, we're putting the important information where they can find it quickly.

This also makes the content easier for search engines and AI systems to understand.

So, Should We Stop Building Backlinks?

Definitely not.

Backlinks are still useful for traditional SEO. They can help strengthen a website's authority and support rankings, especially in competitive industries.

We still use tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush to research backlinks and understand competitors.

The difference is that we're no longer looking at backlinks as the only sign of a strong page.

We also look at whether the content actually answers the question well.

For performance data, Google Search Console helps us see which queries are bringing impressions and clicks. Google Trends is useful for understanding what people are searching for and how interest changes over time.

What Should You Focus on Now?

Our approach is simple:

Build authority, but make your content easy to understand.

Use backlinks to build credibility. Use strong content to explain your expertise. Use clear headings to organize the information. And most importantly, answer the actual question your audience came to your website to solve.

We're not saying backlinks are dead.

We're saying that having backlinks isn't enough if the content itself doesn't provide a clear answer.

As search continues to change, the websites that win won't necessarily be the ones with the biggest backlink numbers.

They'll be the ones that can explain things clearly, provide useful information, and give both people and search systems a reason to trust the answer.

Frequently asked

Yes. Backlinks are still an important part of SEO and can contribute to website authority and organic rankings. The point is that they should be part of a broader strategy rather than the only focus.

It's too early to say that backlinks are becoming irrelevant. However, our content observations suggest that having clear, well-structured information can be important when content is being surfaced in AI-generated answers.

Clear headings, direct answers, simple language, consistent terminology, specific facts, and clearly mentioned brands, products, and entities can make content easier to interpret.

You shouldn't have to choose one. Good content and strong authority work together. Build relevant backlinks while making sure your content genuinely answers the questions your audience is asking.

Tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush can help you analyze backlinks, referring domains, competitors, and link-building opportunities. For organic performance, use Google Search Console.
