What Is Technical SEO? A Beginner’s Guide

If you’re new to SEO, you’ve probably heard “technical SEO” thrown around without a clear definition. In plain terms: technical SEO is everything that makes your website accessible and understandable to search engines — separate from the words on the page.

Think of it this way — content SEO is about what you say; technical SEO is about whether anyone (or anything) can actually get to it. A search engine crawler visits your site, follows links, reads your sitemap, checks your robots.txt file for permission, downloads your pages, and tries to render them the way a browser would. Technical SEO makes sure none of those steps break down.

The core areas beginners should know: crawling (can bots reach your pages), indexing (do those pages actually get stored in Google’s index), site speed (does the page load fast enough to satisfy Core Web Vitals), mobile-friendliness (does it work on a phone screen), and security (is it served over HTTPS).

You don’t need to master all of this on day one. Start with a free Google Search Console account — it will flag most critical issues (indexing errors, mobile usability problems, Core Web Vitals failures) automatically, giving you a prioritized starting list rather than a blank page.
