If you search for a plumber in Texas or an electrician in London, the first thing you'll often see isn't a website. It's a row of Local Services Ads: business name, rating, a "Google Verified" badge, and a call button.
Those ads are going through their biggest change in years. Google is testing a much larger design, and it's moving the whole product out of its own dashboard and into Google Ads.
Let's get one thing straight before going further: Local Services Ads aren't available in India right now. Google's help page lists 11 supported countries, and India isn't one of them. Nothing in this post means the new design has reached Indian search results.
So why should you care? Two reasons. Plenty of Indian agencies already manage LSAs for clients in the US, UK and Europe. And if LSAs ever launch here, the businesses with clean Google Business Profiles and clear service categories will be ready on day one.
1. The bigger LSA design: a US test, not a launch
On 24 and 25 September 2026, ad specialists spotted Google testing a redesigned LSA unit. As reported by Search Engine Land, it shows a larger image and a bigger highlight box under the main listing, making each ad far more visible.
Three things to keep in mind:
- It's a test. Google hasn't announced a wider rollout.
- It was seen in US results. There's no sign of it anywhere else yet.
- Images now matter more. If the larger format sticks, the photo on an LSA becomes a big part of why someone taps it.
The practical takeaway for agencies running US accounts: audit client photos now. Google's migration guide says you can upload up to 100 business photos in the new Assets section. Use real job photos, team shots and finished work. Skip stock images.
2. LSAs are moving into Google Ads
This part is official. Google's transition page says existing LSA campaigns will be automatically migrated to a special type of Performance Max campaign with pay-per-lead goals.
The timeline
| Phase | When | Who moves |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | August 2026 | Select US home and storefront services: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, appliance repair, house cleaning, lawn care, roofing, pest control, moving |
| Phase 2 | Late 2026 | Broader groups, including service-area businesses without storefronts and accounts with custom bidding or booking |
| Phase 3 | 2027 | Non-US accounts and all remaining categories |
So if your agency handles UK, Canadian or European LSA clients, their move is expected in 2027.
What stays the same
- You still pay per valid lead (calls, messages, bookings), not per click.
- Ads still appear only on Google Search and Google Maps, in the same positions.
- Campaigns stay keywordless, driven by service categories and areas.
- Verified status and the Google Verified badge carry over automatically.
What changes
- New home: budgets, targeting and lead replies move into Google Ads. The old dashboard redirects there after migration.
- Reports don't move. Past performance reports won't carry over to Google Ads. Lead history (contacts, messages, older call recordings) does.
- Bidding: manual bidding, like a maximum cost per lead, is gone. Category-level Target CPA becomes one campaign-level Target CPA. Weekly budgets become daily averages.
- GBP sync: business name, address and hours flow one way from Google Business Profile into Google Ads. Big changes to name, address or primary category trigger a review that usually takes 24–48 hours, and the campaign may pause meanwhile.
- BBB callouts are retired. Google suggests adding at least six structured callouts instead.
- No new campaigns inside Google Ads yet. New pay-per-lead campaigns are still created through the Local Services flow.
Migration checklist for Indian agencies with overseas clients
- Make sure the client's account admin email is correct; Google sends notice 14 days before migration and a reminder 7 days later
- Screenshot or export every LSA report now: spend, leads, cost per lead, by category
- Note which categories had separate Target CPAs; plan separate campaigns if you need to keep them
- Check the client's GBP name, address, hours and primary category match reality before the sync
- Upload strong, real photos to prepare for the larger image test
- Add six or more structured callouts to replace BBB callouts
- After migration, wait up to two weeks for performance to stabilise before big changes
- Rebuild client reporting around Conversions, Cost, and Cost/conv. in Google Ads
3. Mapping Indian home services to LSA categories
Google has been making LSA categories far more specific. Its current list runs from broad trades like plumbers and electricians to narrow ones like auto glass repair, eyelash salons and bubble tea shops.
None of these are bookable in India today. But mapping your services now is useful prep, because the same thinking applies to your Google Business Profile categories, which already drive local pack rankings here.
| Indian home service | Closest LSA category on Google's list | GBP tip for today |
|---|---|---|
| AC repair and servicing | HVAC (heating or air conditioning) | Pick the most specific AC repair category as primary |
| Plumber | Plumbers | Add services like leak repair, tank cleaning |
| Electrician | Electricians | List inverter and wiring work as services |
| Pest control | Pest control services | Separate termite, cockroach, bed bug services |
| Deep cleaning / bathroom cleaning | House cleaning services | Use clear service names, not "all cleaning" |
| Packers and movers | Moving services | Show service areas city by city |
| RO, washing machine, fridge repair | Appliance repair services | List each appliance as its own service |
| Carpenter / modular furniture | Carpenters | Upload finished-work photos |
| Home painting / waterproofing | Painter | Before-and-after photos help most |
| Modular kitchen | Kitchen remodeling | Add project photos and price ranges where allowed |
| Home tutor / coaching | Tutor | Specify subjects and boards |
| Pet grooming | Pet grooming | Add home-visit service areas |
The lesson from Google's own direction is simple: be specific about what you do. Vague, catch-all profiles are getting harder to defend in both ads and organic local results.
What Indian home-service businesses should do now
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, and keep name, address and phone identical everywhere.
- Choose the most precise primary category and add every real service.
- Upload fresh, original photos every month.
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to all of them.
- Keep your registrations (GST, Udyam, trade licences) organised. Verification-based ad products ask for proof of business, so being ready costs you nothing.

The bottom line
The bigger LSA design is a US test. The move into Google Ads is real, but it's US-first, with non-US accounts in 2027. India isn't on Google's LSA list yet. That's not a reason to ignore it. Agencies with overseas clients have migration work to do now, and Indian businesses that sharpen their Business Profiles today win in local search whether LSAs arrive or not.
