ChatGPT Ads in India 2026: Cost, Eligibility, and When Brands Should Actually Buy
A media buyer asked whether to move festive budget into ChatGPT Ads. Honest answer: probably not yet, here's why.
What launched. OpenAI began showing ads on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in India late August 2026, self-serve Ads Manager opened around September 4. 50+ brands went live in week one; WPP and Omnicom are enterprise partners. Minimum daily spend: ₹725, a low floor meant to invite smaller advertisers to test.
Who sees these ads. Free and Go tier users only, Plus and higher stay ad-free for now, meaning the reachable audience skews toward ChatGPT's most price-sensitive segment. Finance and health categories are excluded outside the US, a real constraint for BFSI, insurance, and healthcare marketers.
What it actually costs. ₹725 is a daily minimum, not a total budget, and tells you nothing about real CPC/CPA yet, there's no mature India benchmark data. Anyone quoting firm performance numbers this early is extrapolating. What you're buying is early access to a genuinely new placement type, inside a conversational answer, not beside search results, so existing creative likely won't transfer as-is.
Should you buy in for festive season?
• Buy in if: you want early-mover visibility before CPCs rise, you have a small test-and-learn budget, or you already run WPP/Omnicom-managed enterprise media.
• Wait if: your budget is tied to a hard performance target this quarter, you're in a restricted category, or your team can't yet build genuinely new creative for this format.
Ads vs. GEO, don't conflate them. ChatGPT Ads is a paid, labeled placement. It has nothing to do with earning an unpaid organic citation inside ChatGPT's answers, that's GEO. Buying ads doesn't move your organic citation rate, and strong GEO doesn't lower ad costs. Budget them as two separate line items.
Measurement gap. Attribution here is far less mature than Google Ads or Meta. Expect thinner data this first festive cycle if your team relies on multi-touch attribution.
