Most AEO advice stops at the definition. Knowing that answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini pull answers from web pages is the easy part. The harder part is knowing what to actually change on your site, and which popular "AEO tricks" are a waste of time.
This guide covers both. First, the best practices that consistently make a page easier for answer engines to retrieve, trust and cite. Then, the most common AEO mistakes we see when auditing Indian business websites, and how to fix each one.

What AEO really optimises for
An answer engine does three things with your page: it retrieves it (can it find and read the page?), it understands it (can it pull out a clear, self-contained answer?), and it decides whether to cite it (does the page look like a trustworthy source for this question?). Every best practice below improves one of those three steps.
That is also why AEO is not a separate discipline from SEO. Google has said publicly that the same fundamentals that help pages rank in Search also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and there is no special markup or file that guarantees inclusion. AEO is SEO with a sharper focus on answer quality and extractability. For the full comparison, see AEO vs SEO.
AEO best practices that consistently work
1. Answer the question in the first two sentences
Put a direct, complete answer immediately under the heading that asks the question. Aim for 40 to 60 words that would still make sense if they were lifted out of the page and shown on their own. Then expand with detail, examples and caveats below.
Weak: "There are many factors to consider when thinking about how long SEO takes..."
Strong: "Most businesses see early SEO movement in three to four months and meaningful traffic growth in six to twelve months. The timeline depends on your site's current authority, competition in your niche and how consistently you publish."
2. Use real questions as headings
Phrase H2 and H3 headings the way your customers ask: "How much does SEO cost in Noida?" rather than "Pricing Overview". Pull questions from Search Console queries, Google's "People also ask", your sales team's call notes, and the questions customers send on WhatsApp. One clear question per section keeps each answer easy to extract.
3. Structure for extraction
- Use numbered lists for processes and steps.
- Use tables for comparisons, prices, specifications and timelines.
- Keep paragraphs short, with one idea each.
- Define terms the first time you use them.
- Add a short summary or "key takeaways" box near the top of long guides.
Answer engines are good at reading prose, but clean structure removes ambiguity about which sentence answers which question.
4. Show who wrote it and why they are qualified
Citations favour sources that look accountable. Every article should have a named author with a bio, a visible published and updated date, and a clear "about us" and contact path for the business. If a page covers money, health or legal topics, show the reviewer's credentials too. This is the same experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) thinking that Google's quality guidelines describe.
5. Add information nobody else has
If your page says exactly what ten other pages say, an answer engine has no reason to cite you specifically. Original data, real project numbers, local pricing, screenshots from your own accounts, first-hand test results and clear expert opinions give the engine something unique to attribute. Even a small table such as "average cost of a local SEO campaign for our Noida clients in 2026" can make a page citation-worthy.
6. Keep facts current and dated
AI systems are increasingly cautious about stale information. Review high-value pages at least every quarter, update numbers and screenshots, and change the "last updated" date only when you have made a real change. Remove or correct claims that are no longer true. Our note on Google's AI content fact-check rule explains why accuracy now matters even more.
7. Use structured data honestly
Schema markup does not get a page into AI answers by itself, but it helps engines understand what a page is about. Use Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, Service and BreadcrumbList where they fit, and make sure everything in the markup is also visible on the page. Note that Google restricted FAQ rich results to a small set of authoritative government and health sites in 2023, so FAQ markup is no longer a shortcut to extra space in results.
8. Make sure crawlers can actually read the page
- Do not block Googlebot, or the AI crawlers you want to be cited by, in
robots.txt. - Make sure key content is in the HTML and not only loaded after a click or through heavy JavaScript.
- Fix slow pages, broken canonicals and accidental
noindextags. - Keep an XML sitemap updated and submitted in Search Console.
A page that cannot be crawled and indexed cannot be cited, however good the content is.
9. Build entity signals beyond your own site
Answer engines cross-check information. Consistent business name, address and phone details, a complete Google Business Profile, mentions in reputable Indian publications and directories, and genuine reviews all strengthen the picture of who you are. Our 12-point checklist for earning AI citations goes deeper on this.
10. Measure, then iterate
Track AI Overview and AI Mode visibility through Search Console's performance data, monitor referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in GA4, and manually test your priority questions every month. See how to measure AEO performance for a practical setup.
Common AEO mistakes, and how to fix them
Mistake 1: Burying the answer
Long introductions, brand stories and "in today's digital world" openings push the real answer down the page. Fix: lead every section with the answer, then explain.
Mistake 2: Writing for keywords instead of questions
Repeating "best digital marketing agency Noida" twelve times does not help an answer engine answer anything. Fix: map each page to a set of real questions and answer each one clearly.
Mistake 3: Publishing many thin, overlapping pages
Ten short posts on nearly the same question, or dozens of location pages that only swap the area name, split your authority and can look like scaled, low-value content to Google's spam systems. Fix: merge overlapping pages into one strong, comprehensive resource and redirect the old URLs to it.
Mistake 4: Unverified AI-generated content
AI writing tools are useful for drafts, but publishing unchecked output leads to wrong dates, invented statistics and generic advice. Answer engines are unlikely to cite content that contradicts reliable sources. Fix: have a subject expert edit, fact-check and add first-hand experience before publishing.
Mistake 5: Relying on "magic" files and markup
Adding an llms.txt file, stuffing schema or inventing FAQ blocks will not compensate for weak content. Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search. Fix: treat these as minor technical extras and put your effort into content quality. We looked at the evidence in does llms.txt help AI Overviews?
Mistake 6: No author, no date, no proof
Anonymous, undated pages are harder to trust. Fix: add author bios, published and updated dates, sources for any statistics, and evidence such as case studies or screenshots.
Mistake 7: Ignoring technical basics
Blocked crawlers, broken internal links, soft 404s and wrong canonicals quietly remove pages from consideration. Fix: run a technical SEO audit at least twice a year and check Search Console's Page indexing report monthly.
Mistake 8: Not tracking results
Many teams "do AEO" without ever checking whether they are cited. Fix: keep a list of 20 to 50 priority questions, test them monthly across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and record who gets cited.
