Hiring SEO Services in India? 10 Questions I'd Ask Any Agency, Including Mine

It might seem odd for an SEO agency to write a guide on how to choose an SEO agency. But I meet business owners every month who have been burned before. They paid for a year of "SEO services" and got a monthly PDF, a few low-quality backlinks and no new customers.

That makes every honest agency's job harder. So here are the questions I would ask any SEO provider, including us, before signing anything.

Quick answer: Before you hire SEO services in India, ask the agency what it will do in the first 90 days, which keywords it will target and why, how it measures success and builds links, and who owns the work. Walk away from guaranteed rankings and bulk backlink packages.

Table of contents

  1. 1. "What will you do in the first 90 days?"
  2. 2. "Which keywords will you target, and why those?"
  3. 3. "How will you measure success?"
  4. 4. "Can you guarantee first-page rankings?"
  5. 5. "How do you build links?"
  6. 6. "Who will actually work on my account?"
  7. 7. "How do you use AI in your work?"
  8. 8. "What about AI search?"
  9. 9. "Who owns the work if we stop?"
  10. 10. "Can I speak to a current client?"

1. "What will you do in the first 90 days?"

A good agency can explain its first three months in plain language: an audit, fixes to technical problems, keyword and competitor research, priority pages to improve and how progress will be reported.

Red flag: vague answers like "on-page and off-page optimisation" with no detail. That usually means a templated package applied to every client.

2. "Which keywords will you target, and why those?"

The answer should connect keywords to your business: the services that make you money, the locations you serve and what your customers actually search.

Red flag: a list of keywords that are easy to rank for but nobody searches, or that bring visitors who will never buy. Ranking first for a term with no demand is a vanity win.

3. "How will you measure success?"

Rankings are part of the picture, but the real measures are organic traffic to important pages, enquiries, calls and sales. A serious agency will ask about your conversion tracking in the first week.

Red flag: reports that show only rankings and "DA increased", with no link to leads or revenue. Domain Authority is a third-party metric that Google does not use.

4. "Can you guarantee first-page rankings?"

This is a trick question. The right answer is no.

Nobody controls Google's rankings. Google itself warns site owners to be wary of SEO providers who guarantee rankings. An agency can commit to work, process and transparency. It cannot honestly guarantee position one.

Red flag: "Guaranteed page one in 30 days" or "Top 10 or money back". These offers usually target obscure keywords, or rely on tactics that put your site at risk.

5. "How do you build links?"

Links still matter, but the method matters more. Good answers include digital PR, original research, expert commentary, partnerships and outreach to relevant industry sites.

Red flag: "We'll get you 100 high-DA backlinks a month." Bulk links from sites that exist to sell links are exactly what Google's spam systems are built to detect. Google has run four spam updates in 2026 alone.

6. "Who will actually work on my account?"

In many agencies, a senior person sells the deal and a junior person you never meet does the work. That is not always a problem, but you should know.

Ask to meet the strategist who will handle your account, and ask how many other clients they manage.

7. "How do you use AI in your work?"

In 2026, every agency uses AI somewhere. That is fine. What matters is how. On 1 October 2026, Google updated its guidance to say it is critical to manually fact-check AI-generated content before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions and structured data.

A good answer sounds like: "AI helps with research and drafts; a named person reviews and fact-checks everything before it goes live." A worrying answer sounds like: "We publish 50 AI articles a month for you."

8. "What about AI search?"

Customers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode for recommendations. An agency working in 2026 should be able to tell you how your brand currently appears in those answers, and what it would do to improve that. This is often called AEO or GEO. If the agency has never checked, that tells you how current its thinking is.

9. "Who owns the work if we stop?"

You should own your website, content, Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics and any accounts created for you. Make sure they are set up in your name with the agency as a user, not the other way round.

Red flag: an agency that hosts your content on its own sites, or refuses to hand over account access.

10. "Can I speak to a current client?"

Case studies are useful, but a short call with a current client is better. Ask them how communication works, how problems were handled and whether results matched what was promised.

How much should SEO services cost in India?

Prices vary widely, from a few thousand rupees a month to several lakhs for enterprise work. The right budget depends on your competition, the size of your site and how much content is needed. We break down typical package types in our SEO packages guide.

One rule of thumb: if a monthly fee is so low that it could not pay for a few hours of skilled work, the agency is either automating everything or not doing much at all.

Signs you have found a good SEO partner

  • They asked more questions about your business than they answered about themselves.
  • They told you something you did not want to hear, such as "your website needs fixing before SEO can work".
  • Their proposal names specific pages, keywords and deliverables.
  • They explained timelines honestly, usually several months for meaningful results.
  • They talked about leads and revenue, not just rankings.

My honest closing note

Not every business needs an agency. If you have a small local business and some time, you can do a lot of SEO yourself, starting with your Google Business Profile and a well-structured website. If you want to learn it properly, our training programme is built for exactly that.

If you would rather have experts handle it, we are happy to be judged by these same ten questions. Book a strategy call and ask us all of them, or see what our SEO services include.

Frequently asked

Ask what they will do in the first 90 days, which keywords they will target and why, how they measure success, how they build links, who will work on your account, how they use AI and who owns the work if you stop. Clear, specific answers are a good sign.

Prices range from a few thousand rupees a month to several lakhs for enterprise work. The right budget depends on your competition, site size and content needs. A fee too low to pay for a few hours of skilled work usually means little real work.

No. Nobody controls Google's rankings, and Google warns site owners to be wary of SEO providers who guarantee them. "Page one in 30 days" offers usually target obscure keywords or use risky tactics.

Watch for vague plans, guaranteed rankings, "100 high-DA backlinks a month", reports that show only rankings or DA, bulk AI content with no fact-checking, and agencies that keep your content or accounts in their own name.

You should. Your website, content, Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics should be set up in your name, with the agency added as a user, so nothing is lost if you change providers.
