What Is AEO? The Future of SEO in the Age of AI Search

Introduction

Every few years, someone declares SEO dead. It wasn't dead when mobile search overtook desktop, it wasn't dead when voice assistants launched, and it isn't dead now that AI Overviews dominate search results pages. What's actually happening is more interesting: SEO is absorbing a new layer of practice, and that layer is AEO.

SEO's Pattern of Evolution

SEO has never been static. It moved from keyword-stuffing in the early 2000s to backlink-driven authority, then to content quality and user experience signals, then to mobile-first and Core Web Vitals, then to E-E-A-T and topical authority. Each evolution responded to a change in how the search engine actually worked. AEO is the next entry in that same pattern, responding to the fact that the "search engine" increasingly generates answers rather than lists.

What's Genuinely New About This Shift

Most past SEO shifts changed how content was ranked. This one changes what winning even looks like. A page can be cited inside an AI Overview without ranking #1, and a page that ranks #1 can be skipped entirely if its content isn't structured for extraction. That's a meaningfully different game, which is why it earned its own name rather than just becoming "SEO best practice #47."

Where SEO and AEO Fully Overlap

It's worth being precise about what hasn't changed. Crawlability, site speed, mobile usability, backlink-driven authority, and topical depth all still matter, because most answer engines still rely on traditional search indexes for retrieval. A site with weak technical SEO and no authority is unlikely to be cited by an AI Overview no matter how well-formatted its FAQ sections are.

Where AEO Adds a New Layer

On top of that foundation, AEO adds specific practices traditional SEO never required: writing direct, extractable answers near the top of sections; structuring content explicitly around the questions people ask AI tools; implementing FAQ and HowTo schema as a baseline rather than an extra; and monitoring visibility inside AI platforms directly, since traditional rank trackers don't show citation share in ChatGPT or Perplexity.

What This Means for SEO Teams and Agencies

Practically, this means SEO roles are expanding rather than being replaced. The skill set now includes understanding how different AI platforms retrieve and synthesize content, auditing content for extractability (not just keyword targeting), and building measurement systems for AI citation visibility, which most legacy SEO tooling doesn't yet capture well.
