ChatGPT Ads Cost in India (2026): CPC, CPM & Min. Budget

When a client asked me, “So what does a click on ChatGPT cost?”, I did what I always do: I tried to find a number I could trust. Then I had to give him an honest answer, which was: there is a floor, there is a recommended starting bid, and there is no official average. Anyone quoting you a single price is guessing.

Let me show you what is solid, what is only reported, and how to work out your own cost. If you are new to the format, start with our overview of ChatGPT ads in India.

What OpenAI officially confirms

From OpenAI’s Help Center, as of this week:

  • You pay per impression or per valid click. Views campaigns bill by CPM (per 1,000 impressions). Clicks campaigns bill by CPC. Conversion campaigns optimise toward an event you choose, and you pick whether you are billed per valid click or per impression. You do not pay per conversion.
  • Ads are chosen in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Your bid matters, but so does how relevant your ad is to the conversation. Winning is not simply “highest bid wins.”
  • OpenAI recommends starting CPC bids at $3 to $5 USD. That is a starting point, not an average price.
  • Minimum daily budget in India is ₹725. The same table lists $25 for US dollars and £15 or €15 for pounds and euros.
  • Daily budget is a target, not a hard cap. Daily spend can reach up to twice your daily budget, and seven-day spend up to seven times it. A budget week runs Sunday to Saturday in your account’s timezone.
  • Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answers with an advertiser name, title, copy, landing page and image, and are not shown to Plus, Pro or Business users or accounts under 18.
  • Reporting includes impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions.

What is only reported (treat with care)

US pilot CPMs. Reports said early advertisers paid around $60 per 1,000 impressions, with the average later easing toward $45 and some deals at $25 to $35. These come from media coverage, not OpenAI’s pricing page, and they reflect the US pilot, not India.

A “$60 default max CPM bid.” One agency article states this. I could not find it on OpenAI’s own page, so I would not quote it as official.

India rates. OpenAI has not published average CPC or CPM for India. One Indian agency shared numbers from a single campaign over a few days: roughly ₹581 CPM and ₹13.67 CPC. The agency itself called it one campaign, not a benchmark. I include it only so you know what an early test can look like. Do not plan a budget around it.

CPC or CPM: which should you choose?

Choose CPC (Clicks) when you want people on your site: lead forms, product pages, demo bookings. You pay when someone clicks, so cost is tied to traffic. Your risk is a high CPC if your ad is not relevant to the conversation.

Choose CPM (Views) when awareness is the goal: launching a brand, reaching a new audience, getting seen. You pay for exposure, and you carry the risk of low clicks.

Choose Conversions once you have tracking in place and enough data. The system optimises toward your chosen event, and you pick click-based or impression-based billing.

For most small and mid-sized Indian advertisers I would start with Clicks, because the cost per visit is easy to read. Move to Conversions after you have set up conversion tracking and a few weeks of data.

How to estimate your own cost (the formulas that matter)

You do not need a published average to plan. You need two simple formulas:

  • Clicks = budget ÷ cost per click
  • Impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000

An illustrative example, not a prediction: a ₹20,000 test budget at an effective ₹15 CPC buys about 1,333 clicks, while at ₹30 CPC it buys about 667. Your own number will depend on your category, ad quality and competition.

Then connect clicks to business results: cost per lead = CPC ÷ landing-page conversion rate. If your CPC is ₹20 and 4 percent of visitors become leads, a lead costs about ₹500. If your page converts at 2 percent, the same lead costs ₹1,000. Often the page, not the ad, decides whether the channel is affordable.

A sensible first-month test plan

  1. Set a test budget you can afford to lose. Above the ₹725 daily minimum, but small enough that a miss does not hurt.
  2. Start with one clear objective (Clicks), one product or offer and two or three ad variations.
  3. Use context hints that describe the conversations you want to appear in, in plain language. They guide matching but are not exact keywords.
  4. Set up conversion tracking and UTM tags before spending (our ChatGPT Ads Manager setup guide shows where). Without them, you only see clicks.
  5. Check results daily but decide weekly. Spend data can lag several hours, and the budget week resets on Sunday.
  6. Compare cost per qualified lead against Google Search and Meta from your own accounts, not against generic benchmarks.

Things that can raise your cost

  • Ads that feel unrelated to the conversation, which lowers relevance in a relevance-weighted auction.
  • Very broad context hints.
  • A weak landing page, which hurts conversion even if CPC looks fine.
  • Competition in popular categories, which can push bids up as more advertisers arrive.
  • Restricted topics: ads are not shown near certain sensitive conversations such as health and political topics, and category rules apply, so check OpenAI’s ad policies for your industry.

Should you spend on ChatGPT ads at all?

It depends on your audience and goals. ChatGPT is a new channel with limited performance history, and advertisers in India are still learning what works. Plus, Pro and Business users do not see ads, so the people you reach may not match your customer base. I would treat it as a controlled experiment: a modest budget, clear tracking, and a hard stop-or-scale rule at the end of a month. Keep your core spend in channels where you already know the numbers; our SEO vs Google Ads ROI comparison shows how to work out cost per customer for each.

The bottom line

The only prices you can rely on today are these: a ₹725 daily minimum in India, a recommended starting CPC of $3 to $5, and a second-price, relevance-weighted auction. Everything else is reported or still unknown. Test small, measure properly, and calculate your own cost per lead.

Frequently asked

It depends on your bids and competition. OpenAI confirms billing per impression or valid click, recommends starting CPC bids at $3 to $5, and sets a ₹725 minimum daily budget in India. It does not publish an average price.

₹725 per day, according to OpenAI’s Help Center. Daily budgets are targets, so spend can reach up to twice the daily amount on a given day.

Both are available. Clicks campaigns bill per valid click, Views campaigns bill per 1,000 impressions, and Conversions campaigns let you choose click or impression billing.

Reports put early US pilot CPMs around $60, later averaging nearer $45, with some deals at $25 to $35. These are reported figures, not official OpenAI prices, and not India-specific.

OpenAI says ads are not shown to Plus, Pro or Business users, or to accounts identified as under 18. Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answers.

Not necessarily. Google has years of data and scale, while ChatGPT ads are new with limited history. Compare your own cost per qualified lead before shifting budget.

No. Conversion campaigns optimise toward the event you choose, but you are billed per valid click or per impression, depending on the billing method you select.
