AEO vs SEO: What Indian Brands Must Prioritize First in 2026
"Should we be doing SEO or AEO?" I get this every week now. But it's the wrong question. You don't choose one, you build SEO first, because AEO can't exist without it, then layer AEO on top, because Google's India results increasingly demand both.
What AEO actually is
SEO gets your page indexed and ranked among blue links. AEO decides whether an AI system, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, trusts your page enough to quote it as the answer. You need the first to be eligible for the second.
Why this can't wait
AI Overviews now trigger on nearly a quarter of Indian searches, and that number is climbing as Gemini 3-powered AI Mode expands. GEO, getting cited inside ChatGPT and Perplexity, is still early here; OptimizeGEO's Kirthiga Reddy calls India "the first innings" of AI search. We cover the citation playbook in our GEO strategy guide. Early movers get the same head start SEO adopters had in 2010.
The build order
1. Fix SEO fundamentals – crawlability, speed, mobile, internal linking. Weak SEO means AI never sees you.
2. Build topical depth – one clever page on a thin site rarely gets cited.
3. Write answer-first – lead each section with the direct answer, clear H2/H3 questions, no long preambles.
4. Add schema – FAQ, HowTo, Article schema make content machine- readable.
5. Strengthen E-E-A-T – real author bios, first-hand experience, original data.
6. Build entity presence – consistent, accurate mentions beyond your own site.
The common mistake
Skipping to step 3 or 4, bolting FAQ schema onto a slow, thin site, then wondering why nothing changed. Schema doesn't fix a trust or crawlability problem.
Quick self-check
• Does an AI Overview show your brand for your core questions?
• Ask ChatGPT or Gemini the same question, are you mentioned?
• Is the answer in your first two sentences, or buried?
"No" or "buried" on all three means it's still an SEO problem wearing an AEO costume.
